“Tregida is a family business”

Tregida Ltd is run by Coralie and Jon Short, a husband and wife team.  Jon and Coralie met at University where Jon was studying for a Degree in Agriculture and Coralie for a Business Degree. After University they decided to set up a smokery on Coralie’s parents land in Trelash on the North Cornwall coast, with Coralie’s brother Yan. Jon and Coralie built the first smoker by hand and started producing traditionally smoked products including Salmon and Mackerel in 2000.

The Smokehouse started getting notoriety, especially when Jon appeared with Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall on River Cottage. The smokehouse has gone from strength to strength, winning award after award for their artisan smoked products.  They finally said goodbye to their homemade smoker which could no longer cope with demand and purchased a Ness smoker with a much larger capacity. Coralie and Jon have recently installed a wind turbine at the Smokehouse which now provides nearly all of the power needed to run the giant smokers and all the other electrical equipment.

Coralie and Jon decided to expand into the fresh fish market.  Fresh fish are bought from market in Looe and Plymouth every morning by Jon and sent to the premises in Trelash where the team of filleters and packers prepare the fish to Tregida’s customers’ specifications including well-known supermarkets, organic shops, farmshops and local restaurants, ready for despatch that evening.

Coralie and Jon continue to believe that local food suppliers are vital to the health of the nation.  “Just walk into a local farm shop and you cannot fail to be inspired by all the wonderful, seasonal food on offer.”
